THE OBITUARY

Mother Vieleaner N. Cornell

“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” – Proverbs 31:10

Mother Vieleaner Norwood Cornell entered this world on May 17, 1928 to the late Deacon Tommie and Wealthy Virginia Pringle Norwood.  On Wednesday morning, October 18, 2017 the Lord called home another earthly angel.  Mother Vieleaner Cornell, 89, quietly departed this earthly world for eternal life.

“Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.” –Proverbs 31:25

Mother Vileaner Cornell willingly confessed Christ at an early age and joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Whigham, GA (the 16th Community).  She faithfully served the Lord at St. Paul on the usher board for numerous years and became a member of the Mother’s Board.  Mother Cornell’s faithfulness and service to Christ was evident in her example of a Christian woman to the church, her family, and community.  Mother Cornell was a woman of few words, but her countless actions touched and inspired many lives.

On April 22, 1944, she was united in holy matrimony to her soul mate, Deacon Calvin C. Cornell.  This divine union was blessed with eleven children and three generations of grandchildren.  This union was blessed with 58 years of marriage.

“She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.” –Proverbs 31:16

Mother Cornell was educated in Grady County.  She was employed with Wight’s Nursery for many years.  Following her retirement, Mother Cornell continued nurturing seeds both physically and spiritually.  She loved tending to her home garden by growing beautiful flowers.  Employing many of grandchildren and other community members, summer months were filled with gathering vegetables such as okra, squash, and peas.

Throughout the community, she was affectionately called, “Ms. Vie.”  She greeted everyone with a contagious smile and words of wisdom.  Like the upbringing of earthly seeds of fruits and vegetables, Mother Cornell nurtured others’ spiritual body by exemplifying the fruits of the Spirit in her actions; love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  Her life was ministry to others.

“Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”  --Proverbs 31:31

Mother Vieleaner N. Cornell was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Calvin C. Cornell; son, Lemorn Cornell, Sr.; daughter, Francis Cornell; parents, Tommie and Wealthy Norwood; and seven brothers and sisters.  She leaves to cherish her legacy and memory nine children: Vernella Bowden, Valerie Bowden, Eula Jean (Fred) Atkins of Albany, GA, J.B. (Valerie) Cornell, Tony (Dorothy) Cornell of Pine Park, GA, Maggie (Henry) Hudson, Alex (Linda) Cornell, Carrie (Johnnie) Marshall, and Bruce Cornell; sisters, Katrina Johns and Bennie Ruth Davis of Miami, FL, Ophelia Gibson of Thomasville, GA, and Sallie Dunlap of Tallahassee, FL; brother, Clifford Norwood of Miami, FL; uncle, John D. Norwood of Miami, FL; sisters-in-law, Ethel Kay Norwood, Gertrude Norwood, and Ponzella Norwood (all of Miami, FL); daughter-in-law, Martha Cornell; 33 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren; and a host of beloved relatives and friends.
