Alvin Lee Obituary

In Loving Memory of Alvin Leroy Lee

It is with most sincere sympathy that we formally announce the passing of our beloved Alvin Leroy Lee, who transitioned from this life on Sunday, April 3, 2022.

A Time to Be Born: On Wednesday, November 19, 1958 the late Deacon Gus and Ruth Lee welcomed Alvin to the world and into their lives. Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Alvin was the youngest child of Gus and Ruth Lee.

A Time to Learn: He was educated during his early years in the public school system of Chatham County, Georgia. Alvin was a proud honors high school graduate of Boggs Academy in Keysville, Georgia. His love for life long learning and education lead him to continue his studies at Oxford College of Emory University (Associates), 1976, Armstrong State University (Bachelors), 1981, Georgia Southern University (Middle Grades Teacher Certification), and University of South Florida, St Petersburg (Master’s in Library and Information Science), 2018.

A Time to Build: From 1986 to 1999, Alvin was an elementary school teacher in the Savannah Chatham County Board of Education School System. From 2000-2010, Alvin was a librarian for the Live Oak Public Libraries in Savannah, Georgia. In 2012, until the time of his transition, Alvin served in his career at Florida A&M University. He was an Instructor Librarian specializing in Scholarly Communications and Resource Sharing for Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Libraries, an HBCU located in Tallahassee, Florida. Additionally, Alvin served as the chair of University Libraries’ Digitization Committee. He had a passion for learning about digital libraries and digital scholarship.

A Time to Love: Alvin gave much love and affection to his family, friends, and those who knew him. He grew up in and was a devoted member of Bunn Memorial Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend OJ Jackson and then Pastor Charlie B Dillard. Alvin shined brightly as a Senior Choir member, singling lead to many hymns while giving praise to God.  After moving to Florida, Alvin joined St. John’s Episcopal Church in Tallahassee. He was welcomed with open arms and received so much love, care, and kindness from his new church family that he absolutely loved.

A Time for Eternal Rest: On Sunday, April 3, 2022, Alvin slipped into eternal rest while asleep in the comfort of his home while recovering from a recent surgery a few days prior.

A Time to Be Remembered: Loving and precious memories of “Uncle Leroy,” as his many nieces and nephews so lovingly called him, will always be in their hearts. He dedicated an insurmountable amount of time, love, affection, attention, babysitting, and cooking delicious cuisines to the kids in the family and he always treated them as if they were his own.

Alvin was preceded in death by his loving parents, Gus and Ruth Lee. His brother, Attorney Oliver Lee; brother in law George Strong; two sisters, Ruby Jenkins and Ruby Strong; a sister-in- law Rosie Ayanna Hinton-Lee; Cousin Cleo Jean Hutley and a nephew Aswad Hinton-Lee.

He leaves to cherish his memory one brother, Larry Lee of Chester, South Carolina; sisters Granelle Lee, Idella Lee Cooper (Ronald), Gussie Marie Lawrence (Donovan) all of Savannah; Sister-in-law Gloria Harper Lee of Atlanta and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, dear friends, church members and colleagues.
