With most sincere sympathy, we formally announce the passing of Mother Annette Virginia Jasper Hammonds, who transitioned from this life on Sunday, November 3, 2024.
Mother Annette Virginia Jasper Hammonds, daughter of the late Annie Lou Jasper Copland and Wesley Copeland, was born November 22, 1934, in Cairo, Georgia, Grady County. Annette graduated from Washington Consolidated High School in 1952 in Cairo, Georgia. She attended Clark College (Atlanta, GA) and Fort Valley State College (Fort Valley, GA). Annette attended Bethlehem AME church (Cairo, GA) in her early years and accepted Jesus Christ at a young age. She met the late Jimmy Hammonds in Tampa, FL. She married Jimmy Hammonds in Cairo, Georgia, 1954 and immediately moved to Jacksonville, FL. Annette and Jimmy moved to Fountain Inn, South Carolina, only to return to Jacksonville, FL, a few years later. From that marriage, they had four children, Jimmy, Frederick, Teresa, and Reginald, who passed away on July 23, 2009.
Annette was a faithful member for over fifty years at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church (Jacksonville, FL), serving as an usher, deaconess, and on the mother’s board under the leadership of Rev. John E. Guns Jacksonville, FL. Annette retired from food service at Seaboard Coast Line.
Annette was preceded in death by her late husband, Jimmy, son, Reginald, and her brother, Robert Clinton (Clint) Copeland.
Annette is survived by her loving family: children Jimmy (Shirley), Frederick (Sherry), and daughter Teresa; three sisters, Vivian Hill, Veronica Washington (Booker), and Velma Copeland; one brother, Claxton Copeland (Brenda), and her sister-in-law Agnes Copeland (Robert, preceded in death), ten grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
