Henry L. Flowers, Jr

Reverend Henry Lincoln Flowers, Jr. was born on February 26, 1943 in Bainbridge, Georgia and reared in Cairo, Georgia. He was the son of the late reverend Henry Lincoln Flowers, Sr., and the late Aurie Bell "A.B." Greene Flowers.

He joined the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and was baptized by the late Rev. Dr. W.M. Westbrooks, Jr. He was a faithful young man who served as a youth prayer meeting leader, youth Baptist Training Union (BTU) Teacher, Youth Sunday School Teacher until he went off to college.

He attended the Grady County Public Schools graduating in 1960 from the Washington Consolidated High School. He entered the Ft. Valley State College now Fort Valley State University in the Fall of 1960. After completing one year he was called by God almighty to preach the gospel. Being led by the Holy Spirit and his parents, he entered the American Baptist Theological Seminary of Nashville, Tennessee where he received his Bachelors of Theology in 1965.

Reverend Flowers was ordained by the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late, Reverend Dr. W.M. Westbrooks, Jr., in 1963.

After graduating from seminary he returned to Cairo where he began his official work of the ministry. Before becoming a full time pastor of the Beulah Missionary Baptist Church of Camilla, Georgia; The St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church of Newton, Georgia and the Mt. Moriah #2 Missionary Baptist Church of Attapulgus, Georgia for the late Reverend Grady Pinkey during his illness.

His pastorate included Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Camilla, Georgia and the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church of Boston, Georgia simultaneously where he remained for twelve years.

In 1981, history repeated itself and God saw fit to place him at the Greater Macedonia missionary Baptist Church of Bainbridge, Georgia where his father was pastor when he was born he remained there until his retirement in 2009. He was a dedicated pastor, a dynamic preacher, teacher, counselor, and leader. He touched the lives of many not only in the churches he pastor, but in surrounding communities with his spirit filled knowledge and guidance of the Missionary Baptist Churches. He served faithfully and untiringly in the community and statewide in various leadership positions. He did not mind sharing his wisdom with co-workers, and young ministers.

Reverend Flowers has received many awards and has served in many capacities. He has served as president of Congress of Christian Education of the New Grady Missionary Baptist Association, President of Congress of Christian Education, Camilla Missionary Baptist Associations, Second Vice- Moderator of the Camilla Missionary Baptist Association, Chairman of the Bainbridge District Union Meeting, Camilla Missionary Baptist Association Secretary of the Second District Baptist Convention, Vice-Moderator of the South Georgia Missionary Baptist Association, Executive Board Member of the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia, Inc. Instructor of the Congress of Christian Education of the General Missionary Baptist Churches of Georgia, and President of Cairo/Grady Co. Ministerial Alliance.

Reverend Flowers received many awards and recognitions to name a few: Pastor Emeritus Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, President Emeritus Congress of Christian Education, Camilla, Georgia; President Emeritus of Grady County Ministerial Alliance; Second Congressional District Award, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Drum Major for Justice Award.

He was preceded in death by his parents, The Reverend Henry L. Flowers, Sr., and Mrs. Aurie Bell "A.B." Greene Flowers and one sister in infancy, Jean Carolyn Flowers.

He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy a devoted and lovely wife, Mrs. Annie "Ann" Hinson Flowers of Cairo, Georgia. Two sons, Rev. Henry L. Flowers, III., Minister Carlton D. Flowers and one daughter, Cassandra Flowers- Knight. One daughter-in-law, Barbara Murray Flowers of Wrens, Georgia. Three granddaughters, Cherelle L. Flowers, Crystal Starr Flowers both of Atlanta, Georgia and Courtney M. Flowers of Jacksonville, Florida. One great granddaughter, Chase Elizabeth of Atlanta, Georgia. Four sister-in-laws, Mrs. Minnie H. Callaway of Bainbridge, Georgia, Mrs. Bettie (Rev. Charles) Flowers of Quincy, Florida; Mrs. Carolyn H. (Charles) Marshall of Quincy, Florida. Two brother-in-laws, Mr. Wash (Rhodella) Hinson, Jr. of Quincy, Florida, Mr. James (Gladys) Hinson of Quincy, Florida. Cousins Virginia (Louis Jr.) Copeland, of Cairo, Ga. James Bell of Columbus, Ga., and Dorothy Hunter of cairo, Ga. Two special caregivers, Mary Cheevers and Barbara Hatcher of Grady county. And a host of caring relatives, church members, and friends.

Funeral Services for Reverend Henry Lincoln Flowers, Jr. will be conducted Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 12:00 PM at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church 310 4th Ave. S.W. Cairo, Georgia, Reverend Alexander Mack, pastor, Reverend Dr. Emory C. Virgil officiating. Interment at Crestview Cemetery Hwy 84 Cairo, Georgia.
