Obituary

It is with most sincere sympathy that we formally announce the passing of, Mr. Hugh J. Revels who transitioned from this life on Monday August 1, 2022.

Service for Mr. Hugh J. Revels of Thomasville, Georgia will be Tuesday, August, 9, 2022 at Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery, Thomasville, Georgia.

Hugh James Revels, Jr. “Sonny”, was born July 17, 1939, in Thomasville, GA to the late Hugh James Revels, Sr. and Emma Beatrice James Revels.  After morning the loss of his wife, Hugh married Georgia Walden, who helped rear Hugh Jr. and his siblings.

Hugh accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Springhill M.B. Church.

Hugh was educated in Thomas County Schools and was a 1957 graduate of Douglass High School.  Upon graduation he moved to Brooklyn, New York.  His parents had instilled in him the importance of hard work and living a Christian life.

June 28,1968, he married Lillian Brodie and became father to her son Darryl.  In August of 1969 they welcomed another son into the family, Hugh Cameron.

While living in New York he was employed as a driver with the Metropolitan Transit Authority for over 30 years.  He joined Fellowship Baptist Church in Staten Island, NY, where he was ordained as a deacon.  He is a member of the Silver Lake Lodge #59 Prince Hall Affiliated where he became Worshipful Master.

Hugh retired from MTA and relocated back home to Thomasville.  Returning home was a joyful time for him.  He reestablished himself in the community and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding around visiting his friends and extended family members.  He was employed as everyone’s favorite greeter at K-Mart, which was a very fitting position since he never met a stranger.  Later he accepted a position in the Thomas County School System as a bus driver.  His second retirement was from the school system.  He served at Springhill M.B. Church as a deacon and chairman of the finance committee for several years.  He is a founding member of the New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.  There he served faithfully until God called him in the afternoon of Monday, August 1, 2022.

Hugh leaves many cherished memories to his sons, Hugh Cameron Revels (Fran) of Hamden, CT, and Darryl Darby (Patricia), of Tampa, FL.  Grandchildren Cameron, Jordan, and Andrew Revels, Darryl, Patrice, and Shanice Darby. Great grandchildren Nelson and Theodore Darby. Sisters Dorothy Ann Thomas (Rev. B.J.), Rialto, CA, Irene Monroe, Lancaster, CA, Ethel Patricia Revels, Thomasville, GA, Roberta Walker (Marvin), Stonecrest, GA.  Brother Dr. Kenneth W. Revels, Decatur, GA.  Aunt Annie Mae Hunter, Decatur, GA.  His extended family including the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of the late Vivian Massey Howell of Thomasville.  His devoted and beloved friends’ “buddies” Demetrius Sampson, James Johnson, Albert Lewis, Robert Ranson, Fedrick Sharpe and Ernest Scott.  Several special nieces, nephews, and cousins.  The medical staffs of Dr. Michael Gee and Dr. Robert Miles.  And many loving and caring friends.
