Services for James Edward Elijah are at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2015, in the chapel of Cloud Funeral Home, 335 1st Ave. N.E., Cairo. Interment follows at Conyers Cemetery, Climax with military honors. Pallbearers are family and friends.
Mr. Elijah died May 7 at his residence. Born March 10, 1926, in Whigham, he was the son of the late Mittie Elijah Ross and James Elijah. He was affectionately called Edward or Uncle Ed.
He attended grade school in Climax and Moriah High School in Decatur where he graduated. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Also, he enjoyed watching Army movies and sports on television.
He retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in East Orange, New Jersey where he was employed for over 30 years as a chauffeur. Edward had a very fun loving spirit. He loved everyone he met, especially children. He was a concerned, kind person and he will truly be missed.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra (Monte) Mask of Sherman, Texas; son, Vernon Gaskin of Brooklyn, New York; brother, Goldie (Pat) Ross of Fort Pierce, Florida; sisters-in-law, Helen Stanback, Julia Barnes both of Tampa, Florida, Bobbie Gaskin of Queens, New York; 12 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
