Jhynell Wilson Obituary

The arms of our Lord now surround this loving Wilson Family as they say a loving farewell to their beloved: Sister Jhynell Wilson.  Mrs. Wilson passed on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

Jhynell Wilson was born on October 14, 1950, to the late Wilson and Gladys “Pick” Cooper in Whigham, Georgia.  She has two siblings who proceeded her in death; James Earl Cooper and Wilson “Peter” Cooper, and leaves two siblings Emory Cooper of Tallahassee, Florida and Dorothy (Dennis) Mcgriff of Cairo, Georgia.

She attended Washington Consolidated High School until she moved with her family to Long Island, New York in 1966.  She graduated from Hempstead High School in 1968 but was a dedicated member of the Washington Consolidated High School Class of 1968.

Jhynell became a partner in love and marriage with David Wilson on December 29, 1971. This union was blessed with seven children;  Katiti (Don, Sr) Mays of Hempstead, New York, Terrance Cooper of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Noni (Tony) Brown of Thomasville, Georgia, Londa Wilson of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Iesiah Wilson of Cairo, Georgia, Felisha (Bobby Jr.) Cleveland of Whigham, Georgia and Sheena (Donyel) Sparrow of Cairo, Georgia.

Jhynell Wilson was a faithful member of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Cairo, Georgia where she served for many years in various auxiliaries (Senior Choir, Senior Usher Board, the Youth Department, and Pastor Appreciation Board). She served as a musician for New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church both of Whigham, Georgia.

She faithfully served her community in the field of social services; working at the Cairo Georgia Department of Labor and Southwest Georgia Community Action Council. In October 2015, she retired as the Director of the Grady County Neighborhood Service Center. The establishments of the Kids Activity Club (KAC) youth organization in 1985 and Jhynell’s Personal Assistant Service (JPAS) in 2017 were two of her greatest achievements.

She had many gifts and talents; such as, sewing and song writing.  She blessed many individuals and community organizations with her handmade quilts and throws. She wrote many songs, one of which was professionally recorded and performed by the Walden Family, “Jesus Was There.”

Jhynell leaves to cherish her memories to her loving husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, uncles and aunts: Ernest (Sarah) Cooper of Miami, Florida, Stella Mann of Lumberton, North Carolina, Delois Govantes of Cairo, Georgia and Sammy (Pam) Cooper of Cairo, Georgia;  two sister-in-laws, Diane and Denise Wilson of Hempstead, New York; two devoted cousins, Mildred Hammonds of Whigham, Georgia and Annette Spence of Cairo, Georgia; a devoted friend, Cynthia Higdon and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is proceeded in death by her parents, two brothers; God-Mother, Ruthie Lester; Nephew, Ian Cooper, and eight first-cousins.
