Retha Hines Obituary

It is with most sincere sympathy that we formally announce the passing of Mrs. Retha Hines.  Mrs. Hines transitioned from this life on Wednesday, September 16, 2020.

Retha Hines was born to Ossie and Sylvester Hines on September 24, 1944. To this union nine children were born and Retha was the fifth child born into the Hines Family. Her parents and five of her siblings proceeded her in death.  Retha attended Washington Consolidated High School in Cairo, GA.  Upon graduation from High School she married Frank McGill Jr. and to this union two sons were born, Gary McGill and Richard McGill.

Retha later moved to Philadelphia, PA where her third child was born, Bridget Hines (Gammage).  While in Philadelphia, Retha worked as a seamstress and was known to make fashionable garments for her friends and family.  Retha was a dedicated employee and remained working in the garment industry in Philadelphia until the industry was affected by an economic downturn. Retha subsequently returned to school and received a certificate in Nursing to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. She continued in this career until returning south to live in Havana, Florida in 1986.

Retha was introduced to Christ at an early age and while living in Philadelphia was a dedicated member of Greenwood Baptist Church.  As a member she served under the leadership of the late Reverend Theodore Starks and subsequently Reverend Frederick Hines.  Retha was well known for her melodious singing voice and enjoyed singing with her siblings as a member of the Hines Singers, a choir started by her parents.  She was also a member of the Greenwood Gospel Choir and served as Choir Director for the Youth Choir.

Retha was a smart, loving and fashionable woman.  She had a great sense of style and loved looking her absolute best.  She loved her children and family and enjoyed spending time with them celebrating birthdays and holidays.

Although Retha experienced a devastating illness in her early 40s, nothing can ever prepare a family and friends for the sudden departure from this life.  Leaving to cherish many memories are her two loving sons, Richard McGill and Gary McGill; loving daughter, Bridget Gammage (Ulysees); grandchildren, J. B. McGill, Loni Cole (Mel), Damion McGill, Lekesha Campbell (James), Rickeda McGill, Richard McGill Jr., Tiffany Gammage, Kara Gammage, Kaleb McGill; great-grandchildren, Deyana Bailey, Kyree McCain, Jayce Campbell, James (JT) Campbell Jr., Kyndal Carr, J.
