Sister Vernita Willis was born in Grady County on September 8, 1939 to the late Mr. Elijah Williams Sr. and Mrs. Estella Hines (Williams) Baker. She attended school at Bethel Baptist Church School in Whigham, Ga.
Sister Willis accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a committed and faithful member of THE Church of God in Unity in Cairo, Ga. under the ministry of Elder Mahilie Potts.
She was united in Holy Marriage at an early age to the late Curtis Willis Sr. As parents, they were blessed with six children. She was a devoted wife and mother to her family.
Sister Willis leaves to cherish her memories are six children: Curtis (Edith) Willis Jr. of Cairo; Priscilla W. (Jerome) Register of Hahira, Ga.; Jacob Willis of Cairo; Louvenia (Elliot) Lewis of Bloomington, Ca.; Frankie Lee (Amy) Willis of Cairo; Darlene (Willie) Sherman of Cairo. Three sisters: Ethel Lee (Charles) McLeod of Cairo; Willie Mae Woods of Pensacola, Fla. and Representative Louise Williams-Bishop of Philadelphia, Pa. Two brothers: David (Lillian) Williams of Brooklyn, NY.; Little Frank (Isoline) Williams of Cairo. Sister Willis had three siblings who preceded her in death: Pearlie Mae Lewis, Elijah Williams II, and Jan Walker. She has 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, and a host of numerous loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Celebration of Life Service:
Service for Ms.Vernita Willis will be conducted Saturday July 5, 2014 11:00 a.m. at St. Clair Primitive Baptist Church 1190 Calvary Road Cairo. Interment to follow at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery Whigham, Ga.
