Obituary

“…. God sees when all footsteps falter; when the path has grown too steep.  Then He touches the weary eyelids and gives His daughter sleep, and so it was….”

With most sincere sympathy, we formally announce the passing of Sister YaShika YaBrae Curtis, who transitioned from this life on Saturday, June 24, 2023.

On November 2nd in the year of 1982, YaShika YaBrae Curtis, affectionately known as “Shika” was born at John D. Archbold Hospital in Thomas County, Georgia, to the late Noah Curtis, Jr., and Catherine Addison. Sharing in the joy of this newborn baby girl was none other than, her maternal grandparents, David and Mamie Lou Gurley Addison, and parental grandmother, Willie Mae Jones. YaShika was preceded in death by her brother, Carlos Jontavian “Hot Rock” Addison; grandparents; uncle, Gary Addison; and aunts, Linda Curtis Williams and Sharon Jones.

YaShika was a member of the Saint Stephen Missionary Baptist Church in Whigham, Georgia, and was baptized by Reverend C.J. Henry and was currently serving under the leadership of Reverend Harry Mitchell, Jr. She sang in the choir and served as a messenger at the Whigham District Union and the New Grady M.B. Association.

YaShika had so much love for her two adorable children, Addysen and Ava. She was a mother who supported her children in their activities including church, T-ball, and softball with Ava, and T-Ball, band, drama, and ROTC with Addysen.

YaShika graduated with the Cairo High School, class of 2001. She continued her studies at Thomas Technical School, earning an Associate Degree in Respiratory Therapy and later gained knowledge in Cardiology. She was presently employed with the Colquitt Regional Hospital in Moultrie, Georgia. She had previously worked as a respiratory therapist with the Miller County Hospital in Blakely, Georgia.

On Saturday, June 24, 2023, “YaShika, Shika, YaBrae,” peacefully transitioned from labor to reward surrounded by her loving mother, Uncle Tig, and Aunt Vip at Archbold Hospital. Her work here on this Earth was done.

She leaves to cherish her memories and legacy: her mother, Catherine Addison; son, Addysen Jontavian Curtis; daughter, Ava Rayne Sailor; brother, Sergeant DeAngelo JonCarlos Addison (Hanneh & Isaiah) (T-T baby-nephew) of Temecula, CA; goddaughter, Trinity Yabrae Greene; sisters, JoAnne Amelia Washington (Dominique Johnson) of Newark, DE, Diane Tims of Cairo, and Condremeka Smith (Vencott) of Tallahassee, FL; aunts, Vivian Addison Harris (Ralph), Franklyn Jones, Tammy Jones, Jennifer Baker, and Tawanna Willis (Willie); bonus aunt, Bobbie Marcus; uncles, David “Bobo” Addison, Leon (Carolyn) Addison, Tyrone “Tiger” Addison, Darrin Jones (Lydia), and Vernon Robinson (Mary); great-uncles, Billy Gurley (Helen), Charlie Gurley (Betty), and Joe Addison; bonus uncle, James Thomas (Geraldine); great-aunts, Betty Lurry (Lucious), Tommie Copeland, Laura Mae Gurley, Lois Gurley, Mary Alice Gurley, Betty Gurley, Rosa Gurley, Elizabeth Smith, Helen Davis Hayes, and Emmaline Gurley; and a host of cousins, friends, and co-workers.
